#5 The City of Towers

Pubblicato: 29.10.2021

October 21, 2021: Würzburg

J. We arrived in Würzburg in the late afternoon. Already on the first bridge, which we crossed from the huge, free and centrally located parking lot on our way to the city center, we had an impressive view of Würzburg with its many towers and the surrounding vineyards.

The sun was already low as we walked along the Main River into the city center. Many Würzburg residents were also enjoying the sun and the view of the fortress on the opposite mountain. On one of the park benches, I recognized Camilla, a former participant of one of my voluntary service seminars. I didn't even know she lived near Würzburg, so it was funny to meet her here by chance.

After a little chat, we continued into the city center. We were particularly impressed by the Marienkapelle, which, contrary to its name, is a rather large church on the market square. Tiny huts crowded against the church walls, housing small shops. It reminded me of a medieval novel, while Florian thought the space next to the church was used efficiently.

We continued strolling through the city center, past the old university to the Residence. The park of the Residence with its landscaped gardens reminded us a little of the Herrenhausen Gardens back home. From the square in front of the Residence, we had a nice view over the roofs and the many towers of Würzburg.

In the evening, we drove to Kühlsheim because there was a free parking space with Wi-Fi. It was already dark and raining when we arrived at the parking space, which was centrally located in the small town, next to the church, town hall, and school. The next morning, I was woken up at twenty minutes to 8 by excited children's voices, and Florian was awakened at five minutes to 8 by the school bell. It seems that there are no autumn holidays in Bavaria yet. But since it was only 1-2 degrees outside and the temperature in the van didn't reach double digits either, we preferred to stay under the warm blanket and dozed off a bit. It wasn't until the second break that we stuck our heads out of the van and realized that we were standing in the schoolyard, or rather that the parking space bordered the schoolyard without a fence on three sides and was partially used by the children. I thought the many children's voices during the break had sounded suspiciously close.

Day 6 - Total tour 717 km
