June 30, 2022: Travemünde, Niendorf, Timmendorfer Strand
J. The Baltic Sea has a bad reputation. It is said to be cold, flat, waveless, and boring. But that's not true at all. Compared to the last time we were swimming in the Mediterranean (#123, #124, #129), the water temperature (20°C) and depth are very similar, so you can swim well. However, with light wind, there are significantly more and higher waves here than in the Mediterranean, you almost feel like you're in an ocean.
We hiked from Travemünde to Timmendorfer Strand. The beautiful hiking trail leads first along long sandy beaches. Then it goes up to the steep coast. Up there, you walk next to cornfields full of beautiful, colorful flowers and in the pleasantly cool forest, always with a wonderful view of the sea and the Bay of Lübeck. You can look all the way to Hansapark with its roller coasters, admire the sailing ships in the bay, and observe the swallows nesting on the steep coast.
In the end, the path leads back along long sandy beaches and wide beach promenades. The iconic beach chairs, which are found on every beach in some areas, are typical of Germany and turn the long, flat beach and the wide, flat sea into a picturesque image with highlights.
From the many piers, you also have a wonderful view back to the coast or out to the open sea. Some of the piers have restaurants, others have playgrounds or benches. There, you can almost feel like you're on a ship, but without the rocking.
Day 258 - Total tour 19,998 km
