#143 Midsummer Night in Northern Germany

Pubblicato: 10.07.2022

June 12 - 29, 2022: Twistringen, Hanover, Lüneburg

J. We spent the time around Midsummer Night in northern Germany and enjoyed the long days and short nights. You don't have to go to Scandinavia, even in Lower Saxony it is only dark from midnight to 3 am at this time of year, with a bright glow on the horizon in the north. From half past 3, there are beautiful bird concerts from thousands of throats and beautiful colors in the sky. And in the evenings, you can still play croquet in the garden until 11 pm without having to turn on the lights. I was surprised every day how long it stays light. Of course, it is not our first summer in northern Germany, but this year we missed the slow, continuous process of the days getting longer and noticed it for the first time. Even compared to Nuremberg, where we spent the last night, the days in northern Germany are significantly longer.

As soon as we crossed the border, there were no speed limits anymore. Welcome to Germany.

We spent the time in the three beautiful places Hanover, Lüneburg, and Twistringen. Hanover is the greenest metropolis in Germany, where you can watch fireflies on warm summer nights in the city forest (Germany's largest city forest). The longest day of the year was celebrated with the fête de la musique and many bands in the city center and old town. People danced on the squares and streets, in front of old churches and along the river until it got dark.

The medium-sized city of Lüneburg has such a beautiful old town that it is often mistaken for the historical city center. But the old town is even older and more beautiful. You can take picturesque photos on every street and from every house.

The small town of Twistringen impresses with its rural charm. You can always see the distinctive church tower of Twistringen from the wide fields of the surrounding area.

All three cities are worth a visit, especially because of the wonderful people who live there.
