Between glaciers and directly at the highest mountain in South Tyrol, the village of Sulden in Ortler (Solda in Italian) is located. In winter, it is one of the most beautiful winter landscapes in South Tyrol, and this is not because the German Chancellor Angela Merkel spends her vacation here every year, but rather because of the beauty of the mountains and the location at the 3,955 meters high Ortler. The 1,900 meter high fraction of Stilfs in Vinschgau is covered with such snow masses in winter as you rarely see in South Tyrol. Perfect conditions for a winter vacation or excursion in South Tyrol.

How to reach the village of Sulden in winter

The village Sulden in Ortler can be reached from three different directions. In the north, from Austria or Switzerland, drive over the Reschen Pass, past the Reschensee in Vinschgau and turn right a few kilometers after the village of Schluderns towards Sulden. Passing Prad am Stilfser Joch, it is only 15 minutes to the destination.
East, therefore from Meran in South Tyrol, the entire Vinschgau valley must be crossed. Just a few minutes after Laas, which is mainly known for its Laas marble, turn left and drive to Prad. Just a few more kilometers and you will reach the mountain village of Sulden in Ortler. The entire journey takes about 45 minutes by car.
The last option to reach the village at Ortler at an altitude of 1,900 meters would be the Stilfser Joch. However, this high alpine pass is closed in winter as well as in spring.

As soon as you reach the village Sulden in Ortler, the most incredible winter dreams come true. Huge amounts of snow and incredible views of the surrounding mountains of the Ortler Group enchant this mountain village in Vinschgau. It is not so easy to immediately recognize the highest point in South Tyrol, the Ortler. This 3,905 meters high glacier shows itself on the western side of the village of Sulden. The ski area, the well-known Ortler Skiarena, is located at the end of the village in the south. Here you can find slopes at an incredible height of 3,200 meters and with a total length of about 300 kilometers. The Ortler Skiarena is already open from the beginning of November due to its abundant snowfall.
In winter, the paragliders who glide from huge altitudes to Sulden with skis are also worth seeing. The village of Ortler also offers numerous cross-country ski runs for cross-country ski enthusiasts.

My Conclusion:

If you love winter and skiing, you will be overwhelmed by Sulden in Ortler. But Sulden also has its special features not only in winter but also in summer. The well-known South Tyrolean mountaineer Reinhold Messner is of course also present here and has one of his Messner Mountain Museums. The museum of the extreme mountaineer is called Messner Mountain Museum Ortles.
Sulden is therefore an impressive area in South Tyrol and, nevertheless, Chancellor Angela Merkel spends her vacation in South Tyrol here every year. Personally, I have been to Sulden in Ortler twice so far and have always been impressed by the beauty of the village and the surrounding glaciers. You can get a small impression of this winter paradise in Vinschgau and its mountain world from my panorama and video.
