Paradiso di Hunza

Ed eccoci qui; da qualche parte in un paese straniero, in un vecchio camper con intagli in legno, che non è più del tutto impermeabile, mentre ascoltiamo, avvolti nelle nostre coperte, il fruscio della pioggia e il rombo del tuono. Al momento non possiamo immaginare un posto migliore per ripercorrere gli ultimi giorni.

Hunza è una fattoria di permacultura in Ungheria con un'ecolodge per turisti. Di conseguenza, abbiamo una varietà di compiti qui. Dallo spostamento del compost e il taglio della legna fino alla preparazione della pizza e alla pittura dei cartelli.

Un altro compito consisteva nel ricreare un gioco d'orientamento nelle foreste circostanti. Equipaggiati con strumenti, forzieri, catene per le parti di arrampicata e naturalmente i segnali di orientamento, che Mary aveva precedentemente dipinto, ci siamo avventurati nella natura. Abbiamo dovuto liberare un sentiero più di una volta e dopo una faticosa salita sulle colline, siamo stati ripagati non solo dalla vista degli 'otto giganti grigi di un mondo innaturale', ma anche del paesaggio circostante. Arrivati sulla cima della collina vinicola, siamo stati accolti dai gentili vicini con palinka fatto in casa; non solo riscalda lo stomaco, ma anche il cuore. Dopo ci siamo riavviati attraverso canyon verso la valle di Bodolyaber, dove si trova Hunza.

La fattoria è gestita da Roeland e Milady, due espatriati belgi pieni di idee e voglia di agire. L'intero posto sembra una versione fissa di un campo estivo che Stefan frequenta sempre durante le vacanze estive, ma si evolve continuamente. È evidente quanto amore sia stato messo nel progetto. Roeland ha riassunto ciò di cui si occupa Hunza dicendo: 'Connettere le persone e rendere felici le persone.'

Oltre ai turisti, questo posto attira anche vari spiriti liberi che qui lavorano come volontari. Loro vivono nella loro casa per volontari in 'Mini-Hunza' su per la collina, dove possono esprimere la loro creatività; così come noi. È superfluo dire che abbiamo incontrato molte persone aperte a nuove esperienze: autostoppisti, lavoratori volontari e viaggiatori di interrail. Un fatto divertente di questo viaggio: Finora abbiamo trovato più vegan e vegetariani che onnivori tra i viaggiatori che abbiamo conosciuto. Apparentemente, queste persone sembrano essere più attratte dall'esplorazione del mondo rispetto ad altre. In ogni caso, siamo in ottima compagnia.

So, here we are; somewhere in the foreign country of Hungary, laying in an old, not quite leakproof campervan and listening to the sound of thunder and rain from the outside. At the moment we cannot imagine a better place to relive the experiences of the last few days.

Hunza is a permaculture farm with an ecolodge for tourists. Therefore we have a variety of tasks here: From turning the compost and chopping wood to baking pizza and painting signs.

Another task was to recreate an orientation game in the surrounding forest. Loaded with tools, treasure chests, chains for the climbing parts and of course the orientation signs, that Mary had painted before, we marched into the wilderness. We had to cut a path more than once and after an exhausting climb up the hills we were rewarded not only by the view at the 'eight grey giants from an unnatural world', but also at the surrounding landscape. Arriving at the vineyard on the hilltop we were greeted with self made palinka by the friendly neighbours. Typical Hungarian hospitality! Afterwards we went down through a canyon back to the valley of Bodolyaber where Hunza is located.

The farm is run by Roeland and Milady, two Belgian expats that are full of ideas and thirsty for action. The whole place feels like a stationary version of the youth camp, that Stefan always attends to during the summer holidays, but it seems to be ever evolving. One can clearly see how much love and effort went into the project. Roeland summed up what Hunza is all about saying: 'Connecting people and making people happy.'

Besides tourists the place also attracts many different people, who work here as volunteers. They live in their own volunteer house in 'Mini-Hunza' up the hill, where they can be creative; and so do we. Needless to say that we met many open minded people here: Hitchhikers, workawayers and interrail travellers. Fun fact: Of all the travellers we have met so far on the journey, we found more vegans and vegetarians than omnivores. This kind of people seem to be more drawn to explore the world than others for some reason. In any case we are in good company.
