Lahn cycling route: From Wetzlar to Limburg

Publié: 25.07.2020

Today we got up too early because we could only have breakfast in our guesthouse from 8 o'clock. There was a breakfast room and normally there would be a buffet there. But now in corona times it was like in a grocery store: we told the nice lady what we wanted and she reached behind her and gave it to us.

Then we set off immediately, with an older couple who were traveling with e-bikes. They promptly zoomed ahead of us. At first it was raining. We rode out of Wetzlar and took every bridge and busy road in the first 25 kilometers. It wasn't nice. Additionally, it was raining. At first we made a joke of shouting 'Time for a break?' at every bridge because Mama likes it under bridges. But soon we got tired of that too. Once we had to take a detour, and it was quite uphill for a 'flat' meadow.

We hardly rode along the Lahn at first. In Löhnberg, we passed by Selters water and from there we rode more along the Lahn again. In Weilburg, we then rode directly along the Lahn loop and past the castle. That was a beautiful view. Unfortunately, there is no good photo of it because there is always some construction site in the picture.

Then the landscape changed: the valley, which had been wide before, became narrower and the hills not only became steeper, but also very wooded and closer together. The Lahn meandered through the middle. Because of the wet weather, clouds of fog rose from the forest and it looked really mystical. For more than 10 kilometers, we didn't pass through any villages, the bike path was quite lonely. It was beautiful. You could really imagine that the fairy tales were 'played' here.

Over time, the hills moved apart a bit again, and besides the Lahn, meadows also fit into the valley again. We passed through small, very rural villages again, but not many. In a place called Villmar, we rode up to the center where we sat on a bench in the village square and ate our packed lunch, which we had kindly received at the guesthouse. In addition, Mama went to get things from the baker across the street at exactly half past 12 - he was open until half past 12.

Because of the wet and cold weather, our break today didn't last long and we rode back to the bike path, then over a bridge towards Runkel. There and in Dehrt, there were impressive castles on cliffs above the Lahn.

Then we soon reached Limburg with its colorful cathedral and the 31 million euro parish center or whatever it is called. We pushed our bikes through half of the old town in search of a tourist information center, but it was not open. So we found accommodation ourselves, because there were a few listed in the bike booklet. We had already seen one of them when we passed by, a guesthouse above a pizzeria. We went there. We got a room on the second floor with a perfect view of the old town. And we were allowed to put the bikes in the vaulted cellar of its neighbor. Super cool!

We showered and then set off again. The old town with its historic, tall, narrow half-timbered houses was beautiful again, in my opinion it was also the somewhat different cathedral. Mama didn't like it so much. Right next to it was the black Tebartz-van-Elst bunker.

While strolling through the old town, we met the couple from this morning again. They were sitting in a café and we chatted with each other for a long time. Very nice people.

Then we went down to the newer city center with all the usual shops. We stayed longer in a bookstore and bought a postcard for grandma and grandpa. In the evening, Mama and I sat in the pizzeria that belonged to the guesthouse, ate well and chatted for a long time before we went to bed very tired.
