Vacation at the Mecklenburg Lake District

Publié: 10.02.2024

13th-21st August 2019

After the big bike tour to the Black Sea last year, my friend and I decided to have a relaxing camping vacation at the Mecklenburg Lake District this year.

We pitched our tent at a campsite near Waren an der Müritz. Unfortunately, it was very cold in the next few days and we were not properly equipped or dressed for it. (It was our own fault. We didn't check the weather forecast at home and didn't bring enough warm clothing.)

In the following days, we experienced a lot of relaxing things:

  • We read a lot, played board and card games, and cooked together. We relaxed at various lakes and took a short swim in them, but it was always very cold. And we fully enjoyed the program of the campsite, with restaurants, concerts, and campfires.
  • First, we explored Waren, of course. It is small, cute, has a harbor, many shops and restaurants, and a museum.
  • Once we visited the town of Malchow with its beautiful city center and brick church. There was also a turning bridge that we watched turning. We wanted to visit a mill museum as well, but unfortunately it was closed.
  • We rode our bikes around Lake Müritz a bit, several times on different paths. The ground is quite sandy and we passed numerous bird observation huts.
  • Another time, we cycled around Plauer See and stopped in Plau. The bike path was quite natural and beautiful.
  • On the sunniest, warmest, but also windiest day, we rented a boat and took a "circular route" of 16km through 4 lakes, several canals, and even a few locks. That was the highlight of our vacation, even though it was really exhausting because of the wind.
