Week 62 - Alaska Highway

we took the obligatory picture and then set off on the first kilometers. </p><p>As you can expect wildlife sightings along the highway, the hours fly by. In every new valley and around every next curve, we look out for a bear or moose again. However, on that day, we didn't see any wildlife.</p><p>Even on the next day, it was mostly about making kilometers, as there weren't any really worthwhile stops for us in the first 500 km. Shortly after we started, we were rewarded with a doe and two black bears. After a break in Fort Nelson, we continued towards Stone Mountain Provincial Park.</p><p>First, we spotted a black bear cub right by the roadside, with no mother in sight. The little one looked very lively.</p><p>Just a few kilometers later, we had to stop again. In front of us, a herd of wild bison was roaming on the road. These animals are no joke, but fortunately, they were more interested in the juicy grass by the roadside than in us. </p><p>We saw four more black bears along the road until we reached our hike at Baba Canyon.</p><p>On the way to the campsite for the night, we crossed paths with a lone caribou. That was probably our most exciting day in terms of wildlife sightings so far.</p><p>Even though we are happy about every animal, especially bears, it reminds us that we are in their habitat. It’s no coincidence that all trash cans here are bear-proof. We also have increased our precautions. We acquired an airtight box in which we store most of our food overnight. This will be kept in the driver’s cabin at night, as our camper is made of tent fabric on the sides. Perhaps from now on, bear spray will also lie next to our pillows at night, just in case.</p><p>Since bears' noses are seven times stronger than dogs', especially odorous foods must go into the box. Even something like oatmeal and pasta smells to a bear. But we’re not getting anxious about it; we just try to minimize the risk.</p><p>In Stone Mountain Provincial Park, we took a hike to Flower Springs Lake. Although we didn’t have the best weather, the view over the high plain and the rocky mountains was still really beautiful. </p><p>We traveled on to our next campsite right by Toad River and enjoyed a quiet afternoon in the camper as the weather outside became less pleasant.</p><p>The next morning, we set off early since wildlife sightings are more likely in the morning hours. Indeed, we were rewarded with one of the rarest animals. At the roadside, a wolf was having its breakfast. We were lucky that a woman was already standing there with her hazard lights on, showing us the wolf; otherwise, we probably wouldn’t have spotted the shy creature. Unfortunately, Julian's photography skills weren't enough for a good picture. So, unfortunately, you only get a blurry photo ;-)</p><p>We drove to Muncho Lake Provincial Park, where the highway runs right along the lake. There, we hiked the Stone Sheep Trail, where you can allegedly observe the sheep of the same name particularly well. However, we didn’t see any.</p><p>We continued on, and then, indeed, a few sheep were standing by the roadside.</p><p>After a bath in Liard River Hot Springs (we know that from New Zealand), we are now sitting in a lodge with coffee. Here, after days without reception, there is wifi again, so we can now upload this blog entry to you in real time.</p><p>In the next few days, we will arrive in Yukon and slowly move towards Alaska. As soon as we have reliable reception again, we need to apply for the ESTA and take care of preparations like route, sim card, etc.</p>

During the weekend, we unfortunately discovered that our camper has a leak due to nighttime rain. We managed to get through the night with rags, but it was clear that we needed to go to a workshop for repairs.

Fortunately, the next larger town was also our next stop, so we headed to Prince George. We arrived on Sunday but had to wait until the workshop reopened on Monday.

We were lucky that the very nice owner could take care of our camper right on Monday. We used the waiting time for research and to plan the further route.

On Tuesday, our road trip could finally start as we headed towards Chetwynd. Along the way, we stopped for a short but steep hike at Teapot Mountain and a stroll in the Ancient Forest. In Chetwynd itself, we made a brief stop to see the town's famous Chainsaw Carving figures. Various figures from current and former chainsaw carving world championships can be found throughout the town.

In the next larger city, Dawson Creek, we arrived at the starting point of the Alaska Highway. This famous highway stretches approximately 2,400 km from Dawson Creek to Delta Junction in Alaska.

We spontaneously decided to take a detour to Alaska. We won't get this close again. So we will accompany the highway for a few kilometers.
