The second city on our journey along the Silk Road was Bukhara in southern Uzbekistan. Compared to Samarkand, it is somewhat smaller, and the proximity to the desert is noticeably felt: many houses are plastered with a mixture of clay and straw, a dry wind blows through the narrow alleys, making it dustier and warmer.

We spent three days in Bukhara, strolling through the historic city center, shopping and eating at the central bazaar, and spending a lot of time with the people we met at our hostel. Additionally, the city is currently hosting a cultural festival, during which we saw some interesting art exhibitions.

A few subjective impressions of Uzbekistan:

  • Just like in Kyrgyzstan, a lot of construction is happening here as well. In the narrow streets, sacks of cement are piled up, and late into the night, you can hear grinding machines screaming from the backyards and see men distributing mortar or removing debris with their bare hands.

  • Tea is consistently drunk from small bowls. I don't think I've seen a single cup with a handle in all of Uzbekistan.
