During my time in Kazakhstan, I returned to Almaty again and again. It wasn't entirely by choice, as without a car it's difficult to stay away from the city for long. However, since it's quite pleasant to be there, I can't complain.

My time in the city was lovely but also challenging. I found it hard to settle in: The language barrier was very noticeable, I missed a vibrant hostel culture, and struggled a bit with the anonymity of city life. Almaty is not only the largest city in Kazakhstan but also was the capital for a long time. It is considered the most international and affluent city in Central Asia, and you can really feel that. The cityscape includes glass skyscrapers that look like they were constructed in just a few weeks, elegantly dressed city dwellers in expensive outfits, sports cars, countless panel buildings, an endless stream of traffic, small street vendors, numerous construction sites, and bustling bazaars. To the south, the foothills of the Tien Shan mountains frame the city (if the smog allows for a clear view), while to the north, the vast expanse of the steppe opens up.

Over time, I came to appreciate Almaty mainly for its green spaces and cafés. I tried the local cuisine, visited the few sights of the city, and spent many hours in eateries and parks.

Lagman, das ugirische Tellergericht gefällt mir auf Anhieb. Vor allem, weil es auf drei randvollen Tellern serviert wird.
