The main tourist theme in Qinhuangdao is the Great Wall of China. There are several highlights in the region, starting from the Wall section by the sea and working our way up into the mountains.
First, we take a bus to Dragon Head. This is the eastern end of the Great Wall, which has even been built out into the sea. This entire section was constructed in 1381 during the 14th year of the Ming Emperor Hongwu’s reign. The current form of Dragon Head, which juts into the sea, was only built in 1579.
From the bus stop, we have to walk a few hundred meters to the entrance of the grounds, passing by a military area that is noticeable due to loud military jets flying overhead all the time. In the info center, one can get information from a robot that does not understand German.
I find it interesting that besides certain population groups, blood donors also receive free admission upon presenting their blood donation card.
Due to its uniqueness, this location is blessed with many tourists. We make our way purposefully to the easternmost end of the Great Wall, Dragon Head.
Considering that this structure winds thousands of kilometers from here into the continent towards the west, it is like reaching the summit of a mountain that we are now approaching.
A photo at the 'summit stone' is a must, and we join the line of people waiting. My wife uses a small stone step, making her even taller than I am in the photo. She deserves it, after all, her people built this gigantic structure.
On the way back, I now notice the original wall remains protected by glass, as the other precise architecture is the result of elaborate restoration work, by the way, at all points of the Great Wall.
Behind Dragon Head lies a military camp that serves as a museum area.
We walk along the surrounding wall to this spacious area.
First, we reach a schematic miniature version of the former intricate defense system.
Located by the sea, the navy was also trained here.
Exhibits show the former military equipment from the time of the Ming Dynasty. A stone soldier stands between the pavilions.
Before a battle, Baijiu was consumed, and the drinking vessel made of ceramics was shattered to bring superstitious luck in war.
However, we remain sober and summon a ride via an app at the floral exit, which takes us six kilometers north to the next section of the Wall.
