After visiting the Kuang Si Waterfalls, we also want to see the smaller Tat-Sae Waterfalls. The distance from the city is only 15 kilometers. If I described the road to Kuang Si as disastrous, I can hardly find words to describe the road to Tat Sae. In parts, heavy truck traffic and the annual recurrent rains have turned the road into a gravel track.
The last kilometer from the main road to the village of En, from where you can reach the Tat-Sae Waterfalls by boat, resembles a field of rubble. We are literally out of breath. We barely make it to the village when I notice that the steering has gone loose. The tire is flat. We are fortunate in our misfortune. It’s two kilometers to the next workshop, which we cannot manage either by driving or pushing, but we find a tuk-tuk, load the moped with the driver, and drive over the rubble field back to the next village.
After a new tube is installed at the workshop, we decide to try again and head to the river. It can't go more wrong than this; we know how to manage. On the way to the river, we stop at an elephant camp. Here, it is mainly Chinese groups who take a ride on the elephants to the river.
The waterfalls are beautiful, but they cannot compare to the Kuang Si Waterfalls. There is active construction around the waterfalls. We get an idea of what it will soon look like here. But we shouldn’t complain; others seem to like it here.
We decide to return the moped after this exhausting day. But not without paying a visit to Santi Chedi, a temple mountain located on the outskirts of Luang Prabang. Back in the city, we take the route over the old French bridge during the evening rush hour. We end the day at 'Jungala', a fantastic restaurant designed on several levels by the Nam Khan River.
