Goodbye, Saigon!

On November 15th to 16th, we continued our journey by night bus from Saigon to Hoi An. It was a twenty-hour trip, but the bus was comfortably equipped with reclining and sleeping seats - we were actually able to sleep.

After being constantly on the move in Cambodia, we didn't do much in Saigon. We took it easy in a city we had thoroughly explored during three previous visits. Despite all our travel experience, we finally disposed of or donated a few unnecessary clothing items. Sending things home would have been more expensive than they were worth. And we shopped for what we were missing. Where better to do that than in a metropolis like Saigon!

I have already reported on the Independence Palace, which we hadn't visited in our previous trips. Instead of taking a line boat, like we did two years ago, and traveling over the Saigon River and its tributaries to a terminal and back, this time we tested the new metro. A large metro network is under construction or in planning. Given the heavy traffic, a brilliant idea! So far, a first line has been completed leading from the center out to the National University and the city's largest bus station, from where long-distance buses head north.
