Christmas 2025 - on the way to Thailand!

A river cruise - a 'cruise' - on the Mekong... We had almost given up hope of making this happen. There are ten-day tours on cruise ships, which are outside of our budget. The alternative is a two-day trip from Luang Prabang to Ban Houayxay, with an overnight stay halfway in Pakbeng. We were repeatedly recommended a company, but they will not resume their tours until after the holidays on December 29. By then, we would have overstayed our visa.

During breakfast, we happen to learn about 'Shompoo', which operates four boats in shuttle service daily up and down the river between Luang Prabang and Thailand. Booking and payment are handled smoothly online. As is the entire tour process: the hotel pickup, the excellent catering on board, the overnight stay in Pakbeng, and finally the transfer in a minivan to the border, where our tour guide assists us with the exit formalities and additionally organizes a shared taxi from the border to Chiang Rai. A complete worry-free package!

On the first day, we are 15 passengers. We make a stop at the Pak Ou Caves, where locals sought shelter during the war and left behind hundreds of Buddha statues. We pass a gigantic - how could it be otherwise: Chinese - dam project that will dramatically change the Mekong in the future. Some passengers stay in Pakbeng to undertake a trekking tour and travel onward the next day or return to Luang Prabang. This is the advantage of a shuttle service, where a boat operates daily between all stations in both directions.

On the second day, we are only six. Once again, we make a stop to visit a village school in Kenglae, which is supported by 'Shompoo'. The ride on the Mekong is not without risks: strong currents, shallow spots, water vortices. We encounter larger cruise ships or boats like ours - and again and again speedboats that transport people on the river. At the border to Thailand in Ban Houayxay, a - Chinese - casino is being built, but the project has, as our guide explains, been halted by the provincial governor. In the middle of the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge No. IV, the flags testify to where the border between the two states runs.
