Tuscany Tour 2026

Lago di Bolsena - Days 14, 15, and 16

After an exciting weekend with the breakdown, we set off the next morning towards Lago di Bolsena.

Lago di Bolsena is located in central Italy in the province of Viterbo, near the border with Tuscany and Umbria. It is about 90 kilometers north of Rome and is known as the largest volcanic lake in Europe.

It offers excellent water quality, often regarded as one of the best in Italy.
The village of Bolsena is very close by, so we, of course, took a look at it too.

The medieval historic center of Bolsena has preserved its original layout, and the stone buildings standing in the narrow streets are surrounded by the city wall from the 12th century.

Above the narrow alleys of the old town of Bolsena towers the Castello Monaldeschi over the village. The castle was built in the late 13th century.

From up here, there is a great view over the lake and the landscape.

Directly below the castle stands the Palazzo Crispi-Cozza-Del Drago, built around the mid-16th century as the residence of the papal governors of the province of Patrimonio.

Down in the village lies the Basilica di Santa Cristina. It is known as the site of the Eucharistic miracle of 1263 and is also the burial place of the martyr and saint Christina of Bolsena.

We really liked this little original place.

In a restaurant, we enjoyed an excellent dinner on the last evening while having a beautiful view of the lake.
