South Sweden Tour - Day 4
Today, 'Ales stenar' ('The Stones of Ale') near Kåseberga was on our agenda.
So we saddled up the scooter and set off in the morning.
Kåseberga is a locality in the Swedish province of Skåne län and the historical province of Scania. The fishing village is located about 18 km southeast of Ystad in the municipality of Ystad and is situated right by a peninsula with a coastal cliff over 20 meters high. Already in 1864, there were 24 fishermen with 9 rowboats in Kåseberga.
Not far from the village, you can find 'Ales Stenar' on a hill. The path led through a beautiful natural landscape.
'Ales Stenar' is one of the largest preserved stone ship settings in Scandinavia, measuring 67 meters in length and 19 meters in width. The Ale stones are an ancient relic of the shipwreck type. The wreck consists of 59 stones and is typically dated to the Vendel period (about 540–790).
The meaning of the name 'Ales Stenar' is likely to be interpreted as Athal-ås stenar, i.e., 'the stones on the huge ridge'.
Earlier during the Iron Age, burials may have taken place at this spot. The fact that it is a monument from the middle to late Iron Age is evident as the stones are widely spaced apart and not close together like the shipwrecks from the Bronze Age.
After visiting 'Ales Stenar', we took a walk along the coastal cliff before heading back to the village of Kåseberga, where our scooter was parked.
We then spent the evening at the camper enjoying the beautiful weather.
