Southern Sweden Tour - Day 26

This morning we continued our journey. Our destination was Kyrkö Mosse, a small village outside of Ryd.

Kyrkö Mosse is known as 'Åke’s Auto Junkyard' or 'Car Cemetery'. The car graveyard is located in the middle of a forest.

On the way, it suddenly started to rain heavily, and we thought that our visit to the car cemetery might not happen. However, the sky showed mercy, and the rain cleared up by the time we arrived.

Åke Danielsson (1914 - 2000), known as 'Åke of the Moor', initially extracted peat here but later focused on recycling cars. He left the dismantled wrecks standing in the forest. He ran the business until the late 1980s and also lived on the property in the woods in a small house. When he later moved to a retirement home, everything was left behind in the moor in the forest.

The car cemetery has become a popular excursion destination, but it must also be clearly stated that alongside scrap metal in the ground, there is pollution from leaking petroleum products.

Despite the environmental issues, the Swedish authorities have protected the car cemetery until 2050, citing the cultural and historical value of vintage cars.

After visiting the car cemetery, we continued towards Höllviken.

On the way, we passed by the town of Olofström, and we immediately noticed the bell tower. The tower is not directly attached to the church, which was originally built as a chapel in 1933. It stands south of the church and was constructed in 1939 based on designs by architect Martin Westerberg.

Upon arriving in Höllviken, we found a parking spot at the marina, where we will stay until tomorrow.
