South Sweden Tour - Day 23

After breakfast, we vacated our spot by the Göta Canal and made our way to the Carl Johan Locks.

These seven interconnected locks are the longest lock staircase on the canal. They raise or lower boats between Roxen and the guest harbor of Berg by 18.8 meters. There are a total of eleven locks in Berg.

The name Carl Johan Lock Staircase comes from the visits made by King Carl XIV Johan and his son Prince Oscar during the construction period, where the king laid two cornerstone stones.

The construction of the lock staircase took place from 1815 to 1818.

The founder of the Göta Canal, Baltzar von Platen, originally planned to build all the lock gates in the canal from oak wood. However, this idea would have been very expensive, so he decided to follow the British example and use cast iron for the frames.

Afterwards, we headed towards the corner of Vimmerby, as we want to visit 'Astrid Lindgren's World' tomorrow, weather permitting.

After driving a few kilometers through the forest, we reached our spot for the night - a fantastic and secluded camping spot in the woods by a lake. Here, you can only hear the rustling of the wind.
