South Sweden Tour - Day 2

We head north.

Today we got up without an alarm clock, hence we were later than usual. But by 11:00 am, we were ready to go.

Passing by the nearly 900-year-old St. Peter's Cathedral in Schleswig by the Schlei and the Viking Tower with a view from Haddeby, we first head towards Flensburg.

The Viking Tower is an octagonal high-rise building in the city of Schleswig, with a total height of almost 90 meters spread over 27 floors. The building houses 248 apartments.

At the Handewitt border crossing, entry into Denmark went smoothly without controls. Here, the A 7 (Germany) transitions into the E 45 (Denmark).

After Bramdrupdam, we switched to the E 20 towards Odense.

Crossing the Ny Lillebæltsbro (new bridge over the Little Belt) near Fredericia, we drove over the Little Belt. The beautiful suspension bridge over the Little Belt is actually not that new anymore, as it celebrated its 50th anniversary on October 21, 2020.

At the Nyborg Ø exit, we left the motorway heading towards Nyborg Harbor, where we settled in around 2:00 pm.

Nyborg is located on the eastern side of the island of Funen by the Great Belt and is an idyllic coastal town and a central hub in the middle of Denmark. The old town in the historic royal city boasts a history that dates back to the early Middle Ages. From the harbor to the castle, the old town is almost laid out in a grid pattern. The historical core is almost completely surrounded by a canal.

The 'Vor Frue Kirke' (Church of Our Lady) is a Gothic pseudo-basilica made of brick. It is the most important church building in the city.

Near the main square in Nyborg stands the Borgmestergården. This beautiful old Renaissance mansion houses the cultural-historical museum of Nyborg.

Nyborg Castle was built around 1170 by Duke Knud Prislavsen, a nephew of Waldemar the Great, for protection against the Slavs. Later, the castle was used as an arsenal and grain storage.

In the mid-16th century, Christian III placed a nearby mill in the castle's marketplace. The mill ground grain and received a steam engine in 1843.

In 1586, the city's (old) town hall was built on the eastern side of the marketplace.

Additionally, the beautiful old town of Nyborg with its cafés, restaurants, and shops has a wonderful atmosphere.
