Quedlinburg - a beautiful old town in the Harz mountains

This time we ventured into the Harz. This part of Germany was entirely unknown to us until now, so it was about time we explored this area of Germany as well. First, we chose Quedlinburg, but we will gradually visit other regions and cities in the Harz, for example, Goslar is also on our 'must see' list for this year.

The nearby Harz National Park offers a stunning natural landscape with forests, moors, rocks, and streams.

We stayed in Quedlinburg from August 7 to August 10, 2025.

Quedlinburg itself is a town on the Bode River, north of the Harz. It was first documented in 922 and was granted city rights in 994.

The most important sight in Quedlinburg is not a single building, but the impressive overall image of the town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 due to its uniqueness.

A popular photo motif is the small half-timbered houses around the castle hill. We also couldn't resist taking plenty of photos in front of them.

It is said that Quedlinburg is the city with the most half-timbered houses in Germany. Around 2100 half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, colorful facades, and artistic carvings; the town is a true half-timbered paradise. It’s difficult to know where to look first.

The Collegiate Church of St. Servatius is the landmark of the town. St. Servatius was consecrated in 1129 and was part of a women's convent. This convent was founded by the widow Mathilde of King Henry I, in memory of her husband. Both are buried in the church's crypt. The church also houses the cathedral treasure, which is among the most famous treasures in Germany.

The vine-covered town hall was first documented in 1310. The early Gothic building has remained preserved in its core to this day. For medieval standards, the single-storey stone building with the tall gabled roof is an exceptionally large structure. The pointed windows were replaced with Renaissance forms in the 17th century. As part of these renovations between 1616 and 1619, the entrance, originally located on the north side, was moved to the market side and adorned with a splendid Renaissance portal topped by a goddess of prosperity. Above the door is the Quedlinburg city coat of arms.

The town has also offered a campsite since 2025, located about 2.8 kilometers from the old town.
