Port de Sóller and Sóller
After a refreshing breakfast, we set off for Port de Sóller.
The harbor in Port de Sóller is historically significant and was particularly important during the age of seafaring, as the isolated location of the harbor town Port de Sóller, surrounded by the Tramuntana mountain range, made seafaring crucial for infrastructure in the past. There was no tunnel through the mountains in Roman times, so trade was only possible by sea.
In Port de Sóller, there are two lighthouses and a lighthouse ruin from times gone by. Visit the ruins of the Far de Bufador at the northeastern entrance to the harbor, dating from the mid-19th century, and the subsequent Far de sa Creu from 1930.
With the construction of the Sóller railway in the early 20th century, people and goods could be conveniently transported into the interior of the island. Today, the tram from 1922, which runs between the Sóller train station and Port de Sóller, is a unique tourist attraction.
We also did not miss a ride on the historic tram Tranvia de Sóller, passing through orange and olive plantations, and thus we took this historical gem from Port de Sóller up to Sóller and of course back again later.
After the ride with the antique tram, one arrives from the harbor settlement to the charming old town of Sóller, located 4 kilometers away.
The town of Sóller lies in the heart of the orange valley, also known as the 'Valley of Gold'.
The main square 'Plaza Constitución' is the pulsating heart of Sóller. Here stands the emblem of the valley, the church of Sant Bartomeu. The construction of the new church began in the late 14th century.
The majority of buildings in Caribbean colonial style are located on Gran Via. Along the main street, charming palaces with elaborately decorated facades and wrought-iron balcony railings are lined up.
There is always a market in Sóller on Saturdays, stretching from the central Plaza de Sa Constitució to Plaza des Mercat and the neighboring streets. Thus, we also had the chance to explore the market with its numerous stalls.
After our return to the hotel, we had a short time to freshen up before heading to the restaurant 'Salty', where we were treated to a culinary delight, ensuring our 40th wedding anniversary ended beautifully and deliciously.
