We are completely satisfied with the spontaneous choice of this much smaller city compared to Kuala Lumpur. The multicultural mix and the peaceful spirit among its people are impressive. We felt very safe at all times and in every place in George Town and on the island of Penang. The people are extraordinarily friendly and almost never intrusive. Despite the high population density and the many tourists, both the city and the island are very clean .... almost similar to Singapore .... only George Town is much more vibrant, lively, and not as sterile as the larger neighbor. Brief, pleasant conversations with other tourists - for example, from the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, Romania, the USA, or Cyprus - also enriched our stay.

Man kann Singapur, Hoi An und George Town natürlich nicht mit einander vergleichen. Gleichwohl war gerade George Town die (!) Überraschung und in vielen Punkten die tolle Symbiose aus Singapur und Hoi An.Gerlinde7 months ago
Penang und somit auch George Town ist nicht repräsentativ für ganz Malaysia. Durch die Ansiedlung von Industrie (Bosch und Osram haben hier große Werke) und die vielen Touristen ist es schon eine reiche und privilegierte Provinz. Dazu die hohe Sicherheit und wenig Kriminalität ( es ist eine Insel mit nur zwei Brücken, eine Fähre und eine Flughafen, wir unbemerkt verschwinden will, muss schwimmen). Gerlinde7 months ago
Nachtrag: Am Sonntag waren wir noch einmal kurz am TOP of Penang. Angrenzend befindet sich einer von zwei großen Bus-Terminals in George Town. Dort konnten wir beobachten wie eine offensichtlich begüterte Familie - Vater, Mutter und zwei Kinder stiegen aus einem sehr großen Auto aus - den Kofferraum öffnete und Essenportionen sowie Getränke an vom Leben nicht begünstigte Menschen verteilte. Wir waren zu Tränen gerührt.
