On our long journey, Madagascar was the last stop for tendering. It's rather unfortunate because we always enjoyed these crossings.
This excursion combined a visit to Lemuria Land Park with the discovery of the small capital, Hell-Ville. Lemuria Land is a natural and botanical reserve located amidst ancient Ylang-Ylang plantations. We walked along paths surrounded by fragrant vegetation of rare and endemic Malagasy plants, as well as a variety of palms and spectacular bamboo tubes that reach up to 25 meters high. Missionary fathers established the Ylang-Ylang distillery here, where the largest production of essential Ylang-Ylang oil in the world takes place. Afterwards, we boarded the bus again and headed to the city center, where we visited the market that offered local products of all kinds. It was a mix of very different aromas ranging from ‘that smells good’ to ‘let's move on quickly.’ We strolled further through the city and experienced a little of the life in Madagascar, such as laughing children in front of the school or women sleeping by the roadside or sharing the latest stories. Madagascar is the 5th poorest country in the world, yet we encountered many cheerful people. An unforgettably beautiful experience in Madagascar. Now there are 4 days at sea before we dock in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
