Arrival in the morning in Keelung, Taiwan, a small town with 340,000 residents, but boasting a large harbor.
Taiwan, a 36,000 km2 island with a total population of 23 million, has its capital in Taipei, which has around 4 million inhabitants. It has a very tumultuous past, shaped by colonization and wars. Since the revolution in 1911 and the end of the empire, it has been effectively the Republic of China.
On the west side are the urban areas, while the east side features the Central Mountain Range, a mountain massif with over 260 peaks above 3,000 meters in height.
We visit the great monuments of Taipei.
The National Martyrs' Shrine is the memorial for all fallen soldiers during the wars, guarded by an honor guard with an hourly change of the guard.
The National Palace Museum houses Chinese art from the imperial era, including bronze, ceramics, and jade.
The Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, built in honor of the former military leader and president of the Republic of China, features a 250,000 m2 park and an 89-step staircase leading to the 70-meter-high monument made of white marble, which houses a monumental statue of Chiang Kai-Shek inside. The area is flanked by the National Theater and the National Concert Hall.
Finally, Taipei 101. This building has 101 floors and a height of 508 meters, and was the tallest building in the world until 2009. It is stabilized by a 660-ton pendulum ball that hangs between the 87th and 92nd floors by 92 thick cables. The so-called tuned mass damper can move 1.5 meters in any direction to counteract vibrations.
