Hiking, sweating, complaining

Published: 07.08.2020

Today we're starting early, we're taking the bus to Corfu City at just after eight and then going from there to the meeting point at the harbor. Of course, we then realize that our hike with Georgia is in Benitses. So we never had to go to Corfu City😂.

Arriving at the hiking trail, we go through bushes and a beautiful green landscape up the mountain. At some point, I realize that if you go up a mountain, you also have to go back down. I don't like that at all... but I'm not really thinking about it too much yet. We hike, sweat, say "oh, how beautifuulll", enjoy ourselves, and complain about the effort...

We see the Aqueduct of Benitses, the most important water supply of Corfu, green vegetation, olive trees (alive and dead), fig trees, and Dercia, a snake. Once we reach the top, we refresh ourselves in a café with cold drinks and get to know Georgia better. She studied Restoration and has worked in Poland, Germany, and England, among other places. And she speaks excellent German... oh yeah... and never thought that there would be a 14-year age difference between us 😂.

We have a debate about whether we should take the same path back or not through the forest, the non-forest path is longer, but I have slipped so many times while descending and I'm afraid of it... so I'm glad that we take a different path down. Yes, it's much longer, but also safer🙂 Dercia is not amused in some places, too long, too hot, too steep, not even the beautiful mountain villages or delicious berries as provisions can make up for it... but she bravely does it for her sister's sake. Thank you for that 😘.

What else do I notice? The weather is always good, but suddenly it rains for a minute despite the glorious sunshine. And somewhere there's always thunder, but actual rain almost never follows. Bizarre. The nice waitress from the aaaaamazing restaurant (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g776025-d4468450-Reviews-The_Flower_Garden_Restaurant-Benitses_Corfu_Ionian_Islands.html?m=19905 )

explains to us that the weather is acting up this year. Normally, at this time it's over 40°, no rain in sight. This year it's around 30° in August and there's the occasional sudden shower to freshen things up. Speaking of refreshing, after hiking we jump into the cool water...

Tomorrow we say goodbye to Benitses.
