Corfu Town

No thunderstorms since morning? Not a chance. Instead, warm temperatures await us in Corfu Town. We take public transportation from our home to the capital. The splendor of Corfu Town is visible everywhere: in the magnificent mansions of the Old Town, the Liston Arcade, and the largest square in Southeast Europe, the Spianada. Venetians, English, French, Russians, Greeks - they all shaped the island. The result is a unique cultural diversity that we find breathtakingly beautiful. We quickly enter a store called The Island and I find an animal print skirt...with zebras! But what I also find is that the stores, the shops, are individual and special. What I missed in Croatia to some extent; where there were always the same shops, there are even more here. We stroll and admire.

Our path leads us to a quick snack with garlic bread at the restaurant Safran, Dercia falls in love with the house tiger here.

She can only reluctantly part with him and run with me to the new fortress of the town. Its construction began in the 16th century, also by the ruling Venetians. It was supposed to protect the northwest of Corfu. Numerous houses of the capital's inhabitants had to make way for the construction of the new fortress and were demolished. Once a military restricted area, the new fortress can now be visited - admission is free.

We really like the view of the city, and of course we now also want to visit the old fortress at the other end of the Old Town.

The construction of the old fortress began in the 16th century by the Venetians, who ruled over Corfu at the time. Today, only the outer walls are evidence of this - the buildings inside were mainly built by the English rulers in the 19th century. Parts of the buildings in the northern part of the fortress, for example, house the music faculty of the University of Corfu. In the summer, the windows are open, and if you visit the fortress, you might even hear the piano and flute playing of the students. What we see on the plates of others makes our mouth water. Let's just say... it unfortunately involves meat 🙂😟😋. And suddenly, perhaps as punishment from the vegan gods, the sky collapses on us and it rains like crazy. But that gives us time to reflect on our travel destination, the green island of Corfu. We really like it here! One decisive reason is that we encounter incredibly friendly, open, and funny people at every turn. Oh yes, and most Greeks, regardless of age, speak English well.
