A great last day

Published: 11.08.2020

We're heading to the northwest, Dercia read about a beach the night before that should open up to hikers after a hike over mountains and rocks and be beautiful (Porto Timoni). So let's go. We're not leaving as early as we wanted. On the way, the GPS leads us in circles several times until we eventually realize, "Hey, we've seen this curve before."

We continue, now the GPS has caught up again, we enjoy the drive when suddenly a dog jumps next to our car and barks at Anticarlos, and another one approaches the moving car - from the front - and sees it as a threat as well. I can only swerve because there is no oncoming traffic. I've had enough, but I'm looking forward to the beach and the small village where you reach the hiking trail. It's called Afionas, and I have to say, it's one of the most beautiful villages I've ever seen. We arrive at 8:30, change shoes, and see two sweaty hikers... they just finished hiking back from the beach, and their sweaty and shiny faces are evidence of their effort. Well, we're in for a challenge. But we're glad to be here early before it gets unbearably hot again. It goes downhill, which is not for Caro, who always has a problem with it because she could fall or falls, but Dercia enjoys the way. The view that keeps appearing is impressive. We're there after a few kilometers!

The beach is divided into two, one side of the sea is supposed to be warmer than the other. But what it is, is empty. There are no people on our side, we splash and swim alone, with the mountain beside us, and some caves on the right. Just great. I could stay here for hours. We stay a bit, but we know it will get more difficult when we walk back at noon.

The way back feels shorter, but that's also because we're really hurrying because we want to get the uphill part over with. Dercia gets a headache from the heat and effort, but she handles it great. My white shirt has become see-through, that's why I have spare clothes in the car.

We stroll through the village, spend a little money, and have a really good meal (http://anemosafionas.com/) recommended by a German couple who have owned a business in Afionas for over 20 years (among other things, you can buy beard brushes. I politely decline, the tweezers still work). We have bread, tzatziki, stuffed peppers, and a specialty made of honey, feta cheese, and sesame. Yummy.

Dercia realizes she's tired and wants to rest a bit, after all, we want to go to yoga in the evening. We meet Sean and Eva in the evening, about 15 km away from our place. We follow them, the signs point to various villages, one even to the Sunset. And then we're there, looking out over the sea, completely secluded and everyone has the feeling that it has gotten warmer again 😂. 7:45 PM, Sunset Yoga can begin. We're sweating, it's running down, but it's wonderful, the day ending, the sun turning red, silence, just a few cicadas somewhere. After our hour, the two prepare the food and wine, Dercia and I walk to the water, Dercia puts her feet in the rock pool. When we get back to Sean and Eva, we enjoy the homemade dips, sesame sticks, vegetables, and homemade wine. And we talk. And a lot. I didn't think she was only 22, Dercia seems more mature. Of course, we picked up on the story again that Sean thought the day before that Dercia was 32... and she scolded him again for that 😂.

It gets darker and for the first time in my life, I see a shooting star ☄️, it couldn't be better.

At the end of the evening, we say goodbye, Sean, Eva, thank you for the great yoga sessions (https://instagram.com/yogaxplorer?igshid=1dxfuglegzfon

The next day is about cleaning up and packing, in the evening we fly to Berlin. Oh yes, and before that, I have to take care of the car damage 😂.

Corfu... I've never really thought about you, we came to you as a last resort. Thank God. I find it breathtakingly beautiful here, in terms of landscape, people, and culinary delights.

I would love to come back!

And Dercia - she is the best 😘
