Early in the morning, we leave Gauja National Park and take different paths. The motorcycle takes the coastal route – where the chance of rain is lower. The van heads directly towards Pärnu and thus to the next country on our journey: Estonia.
Hardly over the border, we see the first typical red wooden houses with white window frames. And of course: the first warning signs with the moose. This immediately sparks hope of maybe seeing one – ideally not right in front of the car, but it would be nice to see it from a distance. What also stands out: The roads are empty; sometimes we drive for long stretches without encountering another car.
A quick stop in Pärnu leads us to the supermarket – a little adventure: Nothing is in English, and Google Image Search only helps moderately.
Then we continue westward. Our destination today is a small peninsula called Puise – a farm at the very end of the road. The roadway gets narrower and narrower, and there’s no oncoming traffic. Then, at the end of the world: the Puise Nina Külalistemaja, which means 'Nina's Guesthouse.' A farm surrounded by a colorful flower meadow and the Baltic Sea. Could it be more beautiful?
Here we also meet Annett and Christian – aunt and uncle, who are also traveling through the Baltics and whom we almost missed. We spend two days together, relaxing and maybe even making new plans for the next stages.
In the late afternoon, a strong summer thunderstorm rolls over the farm – lightning, thunder, rain, and the whole program.
What follows is complete peace: no techno, no annoying neighbors. Instead: freshly caught perch from the Baltic, lovingly prepared by Nina’s mother. The two take care of everything – the guests, the farm, and the food.
We conclude the day with a fantastic sunset – and of course, the mosquitoes mustn't be missing. Hehe.
After two relaxed days, we part ways again. The morning is quiet, slow, and foggy.
For us, it continues to Haapsalu – tomorrow the great island hopping begins.
Estonian Silence at the End of the Road
Early in the morning, we leave Gauja National Park and part ways for a bit. The motorbike takes the scenic coastal route – less chance of rain – while the van heads straight toward Pärnu and into the next country on our journey: Estonia.
Just across the border, the landscape changes. We spot the first traditional red wooden houses with white window frames. And of course – the first moose warning signs. That sparks immediate hope of seeing one. Not right in front of the vehicle, preferably, but from a distance would be nice. Another thing we notice: the roads are empty. Sometimes, we drive for ages without seeing a single other car.
We make a quick stop in Pärnu for supplies, which turns into a mini adventure: nothing is labeled in English, and even Google Image Search is only somewhat helpful.
Then we continue west. Our destination today is a small peninsula called Puise – and at the very end of the road lies a farm. The further we go, the narrower the road gets, and eventually, there's no more oncoming traffic at all. Then finally, at what feels like the end of the world: Puise Nina Külalistemaja – which translates roughly to 'Nina’s Guesthouse.' A farm surrounded by a colorful wildflower meadow and the Baltic Sea. Could it get any better?
Here we also meet up with Annett and Christian – aunt and uncle, who are also traveling the Baltics and who we almost missed. We spend two peaceful days together, relaxing and maybe even hatching plans for the next adventures.
In the late afternoon, a proper summer thunderstorm rolls in – thunder, lightning, heavy rain, the full show.
What follows is pure peace: no techno, no loud neighbors. Instead: freshly caught perch from the Baltic, lovingly prepared by Nina’s mother. The two women take care of everything – the guests, the house, the food.
We end the day with a stunning sunset – and yes, the mosquitoes make their appearance too. Hehe.
After two restful days, we part ways again. The morning is quiet, slow, and foggy.
Next up for us: Haapsalu – tomorrow, island hopping begins.
