The Cape of Consolation

As we leave Mehamn on this gray, cold morning, we see that the snow markers are already being put up – how fitting. We continue towards the North Cape through Kjøllefjord. The Nordkapp Tunnel initially frightens us with its thick smoke. Fortunately, it quickly becomes clear that it is harmless – apparently, a large, smoky diesel vehicle had just passed through before us.
About ten kilometers before our destination, hope arises: the rain has stopped, maybe we are lucky. But just three kilometers before the Cape, we plunge into a thick wall of fog. Typical! Nevertheless, we make the best of it. After all, we have the globe monument almost to ourselves. After the obligatory proof photo, we treat ourselves to a snack – and right after the second bite, the sky suddenly clears. So we get the camera out again and set off.
Only, it seems all the visitors from the museum and shops have the same idea. Within no time, the place is swarming with people. So, we settle for a view from a distance before we finish our meal.
On the way back, we pass through the tunnel again and finally stop at a rest area a bit below the island. After nearly seven hours of driving and with the hike to Kinnarodden still in our bones, we soon fall exhausted into bed.

The Cape of Consolation - North Cape

As we leave Mehamn on this gray and chilly morning, we notice that the snow markers are already being put up – how fitting. Our route takes us through Kjøllefjord and on towards the North Cape. The Nordkapp Tunnel gives us quite a scare at first, as it’s completely filled with smoke. Luckily, it turns out to be harmless – apparently a large, smoky diesel vehicle had passed through just before us.
About ten kilometers before our destination, hope rises: the rain has finally stopped. But just three kilometers before the Cape, we drive straight into a thick wall of fog. Typical! Still, we try to make the best of it. At least we have the globe monument almost entirely to ourselves. After the obligatory photo, we sit down for a quick snack – and right after the second bite, the sky suddenly clears. Time to give it another try.
Only problem: it seems everyone inside the museum and shops had the very same idea. Within minutes, the place is swarming with people. So we settle for a view from a distance before finishing our meal.
On the way back, we pass through the tunnel once more and finally stop at a rest area below the island. After nearly seven hours of driving and with the long hike still weighing on our legs, we soon drift off into a deep sleep.
