5th Stage: Freising - Oberstdorf (Birgsau)

Once again, I had to tackle over 200 kilometers, and today was the only stage without a summit. However, even without a peak, the route promised to be anything but boring. Just a week ago, I had slightly modified the original route, which took me beneath the sentinel of the Allgäu, the Grünten, further south. This meant I had to climb up to over 1,200 meters at the Oberjoch Pass, which is higher than on the Franconian peaks. …not to mention the other mountains!


But I wasn't there yet. I rode along the Isar for another 11 km before making a wide arc over the southwest part of the most beautiful state until I get close again the day after tomorrow. The next river was not long in coming, and after about an hour of riding, I reached the Amper. I followed the river through Dachau - where I was yet again due for a visit to the bike shop 🙈. During some seminars, I had often been in Dachau at the riot police department.


Adjacent to this is what Dachau became known for worldwide, the Dachau concentration camp. The memorial site tells of the suffering of the total of 161,896 inmates housed there, of whom only a small number were able to leave the camp alive at the liberation on May 29, 1945.
