July 2025 - Vienna - The Third Man Tour

One feels like a secret agent when searching for the meeting point of the 'Third Man' tour. And here lies my only criticism: The directions could definitely be clearer. While the red light lines in the Karlsplatz subway station stand out, the indicated arrows are more confusing than helpful.

Important: You must first get to fresh air! It's best to take the subway exit Operngasse – from there you can already see the small ticket booth. Knowing this saves a lot of searching.

Once you arrive, you are warmly welcomed. Tickets cost only 10 euros per person – a very fair price that the city of Vienna keeps intentionally low.

Again important: The tours only take place from May to October, and you must definitely book in advance! Without a reservation, it usually doesn't work.

What can you expect from the tour?

At its core, it is an exciting, partially adventurous guided tour through the canal network of Vienna, of course with a helmet and hygiene cap (which already provides the first laugh). Then you go straight down.

The tour is entertaining and informative: Our two guides were in great spirits and explained vividly how the Viennese canals are cleaned and maintained. This is complemented by video inserts directly on the canal walls.

Of course, the film history is not neglected either. Above all, the famous agent classic 'The Third Man', which was shot here and even won an Oscar. Funny anecdotes: 'Mission Impossible' was rejected (a planned helicopter flight through the canal turned out to be too spectacular) and even James Bond did not receive permission for a car ride under Vienna.

By the way: The main canal is a real waterway, and with a bit of luck, you might encounter a boat during the tour. However, the canal cannot be entered, so paddlers must strictly remain seated.

Smell? Surprisingly unremarkable. Occasionally there is even a hint of chocolate or beer in the air, especially when the wafer manufacturer Manner or a brewery cleans their tanks.

Temperature? Pleasant year-round.

Ascent and descent? Secret agent-like – through a star-shaped manhole cover.

An extraordinary insight into the underworld of Vienna, full of wit, knowledge, and film history.
