2026 - June - Lipizzaner Stud in Lipica

Published: 18.06.2026

Most people, when thinking of the famous Lipizzaner horses, will likely picture the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.

And that isn't incorrect. However, the origin of breeding these horses lies in Lipica, in present-day Slovenia. From the sturdy Karst horse, along with Spanish and Arabian horses, the new breed was gradually developed. This process has been ongoing since 1580.

Meanwhile, there are now distinct lines both here and in Austria, and practically worldwide. To avoid inbreeding, breeding stallions are regularly exchanged.

This also unravels the mystery behind the photo featuring a bock-like structure. Many people actually associate this sight with rodeo or something meant for human training.

But no, this structure is intended for the collection of semen from breeding stallions. For this purpose, a mare in heat is placed in a neighboring box. The stallion is stimulated by this scent to leap onto the supposed mare.

This way, the stud farm can strategically manage and shape the breeding process, resulting in virtually no surprises.

You can learn this and much more during your visit to the Lipizzaner Stud in Lipica. Unfortunately, there is no truly practical public transportation connection there, and one usually has to book a tour or come by car.

It is also possible to observe the horses' training and, on certain days, enjoy shows in the arena. The best stallions are trained here in Lipica, just like in Vienna.
