Hello to all cruise enthusiasts who prefer not to travel in groups. Just like me. I am only drawn to cruise ships for special occasions. This time it's the maiden voyage of the Mein Schiff Flow. And today it docked in Koper, Slovenia, as part of the journey.
One might not immediately associate Slovenia as an Adriatic coastal country, as it only has 46 km of coastline to show for it. However, besides Koper, there is another, much smaller and even more beautiful coastal town, and that is Piran.
On a cruise, there is often little time to explore, but you should definitely plan to visit this location. Regular buses run from Koper to Piran. For just 3 euros per trip, it will take you about 40 minutes to reach your desired destination.
As in Venice, you will recognize Piran by the Campanile, the freestanding bell tower. The similarity is intentional. It was indeed modeled after the famous bell tower in St. Mark's Square in Venice, as the Venetians ruled here for 500 years.
A climb up the tower is worthwhile, as is climbing the city walls. While both do cost a few euros, the view from the top is truly fantastic.
