Day 9: Lohr --> Wertheim

Published: 27.07.2023

Today, the weather was really bad in the morning. So, as a last resort ;-) I went to the local 'Spessart-Museum'.

And I thought it was really good.

First of all, there was a special exhibition on migration, including a film with a Syrian and a Nigerian young man. It also addressed German expulsion histories and featured written statements from people in Lohr with migration or refugee backgrounds from various decades. Everything was very well presented and very moving.

The main focus of the museum was the conditions in the Spessart (a region in Germany). They were showing the film 'Das Wirtshaus im Spessart' from the fifties in one of the rooms, which was quite funny and nostalgic. But apart from the robber bands, they also focused on woodworking and glass processing, and in this context, they had a complete carpenter's workshop. The carpenter, known as a 'Wagner' in the north of Germany, used to be one of several woodworking professions, and coincidentally, it was also my father's profession. So, personally, it was a highlight for me because his workshop looked almost the same. The former owner of the museum workshop and my father both gave up their profession at almost the same time in the early 60s because the triumph of rubber tires and metal cars rolled right over them.

Next door was the workshop of a furniture maker and restorer who was working there 'live'. He told me that he was able to 'work for a living' in the museum workshop because he couldn't afford his own workshop anymore. I thought this was a very creative and unusual way to bring a museum to life.

Most of the time I spent in the museum, heavy rain was pouring down outside, and I was a little worried about how the tour would continue.

At half-past one, the rain stopped, I went back, packed my stuff, and headed towards Wertheim, where the Tauber River flows into the Main River and where the cycle path 'Liebliches Taubertal' ends or, from my perspective, begins. The weather forecast was still bad, it wasn't raining heavily anymore, but it was still drizzling. And when I arrived in Wertheim shortly after five, that hadn't changed. It would have been another 30 km to the next stop at Tauberbischofsheim (TBB), which was too far for me, so it was another short stage today.

Wertheim seamlessly joined the long line of charming small towns with lots of half-timbered houses (and an impressive castle), so there's nothing more to add at this point. Today, 62 km, a total of 687.
