Day 10: Wertheim --> Öhringen

Published: 27.07.2023

I cheated: Considering the current weather conditions, I've decided to take a direct route to Öhringen for now, to visit my old friend B., maintain some family and old acquaintanceships, and - weather permitting - take day trips in my old hometown. Which even back then I only knew selectively. There were certain towns and areas I never made it to back then. Maybe I can fill in some gaps...

Oh, and about my puns with the quest for meaning, I need to tone it down: I just found out that the river is not called 'der Sinn', but 'die Sinn'. If only I had known...

Now, onto today: I rode a section of the 'Liebliches Taubertal' bike path, from its mouth in Wertheim to the small town of Lauda, passing through Tauberbischofsheim (nice, half-timbered, not much going on...). The Tauber is very similar to the Kocher and Jagst, and I already felt quite at home here, starting with the language (Grüß Gott, Ade).

Interestingly, just before TBB, I ran into an older gentleman (around my age) who was tinkering with his recumbent bike and trailer, as he had a flat tire. I asked if he needed help (no) and where he was heading. He told me he was actually on a tour around Germany, but had to stop in Schliersee due to technical problems. He had started in Kleve and had already covered about two-thirds of the journey (clockwise). It was funny to see that there are more people with crazy ideas like that.

In Lauda, I reluctantly hopped on a regional train to Möckmühl on the Jagst (very nice, half-timbered, not much going on...) and from there, I rode the last twenty-something kilometers back to Öhringen. When I arrived in Möckmühl, a heavy downpour awaited me, and after it subsided and I started cycling, everything was fine for a few kilometers, until it started pouring again in the middle of the forest. I found shelter under the roof of a forest worker's hut, got lost again because my phone had run out of battery, and the power bank refused to charge due to the rain. I then completed the remaining part of the route on the Kochertal bike path and then the Ohrntal bike path. By that time I had already dried up a bit, but when I arrived at Berthold's, the last rain shower of the day poured down on me.

So, my interim destination has been reached, and in the next few days, there probably won't be much worth reporting or able to be reported, so the blog is going on a little hiatus now. I will cautiously consider which parts of the return journey I will cover by bike (and when) in the next few days that I'm here! Oh, and today 65 km, a total of 752, but I also have a suspicion that what 'H' commented may be rounded up a bit. At least it's always a few kilometers more than what Google Maps claims.
