Day 5: Kassel --> Rotenburg/Fulda

Published: 25.07.2023

I have to step on the gas a little, otherwise I will never catch up:

After getting some halfway decent sleep at Ute's, I had chosen a bakery nearby for breakfast. I actually wanted to sit there in peace, but then a group of eight children with three caretakers arrived, a typical German group, a presumably Ukrainian one, and a young man with a dark skin color and an interesting accent that I couldn't place. The children were all somewhat disturbed, disabled, or difficult, in one way or another, and it was an interesting encounter for me because there was also a bit of awareness in the background that I hadn't completely missed such a profession, because I thought all three of them seemed to be doing a really good job, and I was very glad that I didn't have to do it.

Well, I didn't have to prolong it too much and continued on, through the Karlsaue to the Fulda cycle path. It's still a special feeling to be in Kassel, I was always ready to identify ancient acquaintances in the people I saw.

Just before Guxhagen, the Eder and Fulda paths separated, and now a new path really began because I had already done the other route via the Eder to the Lahn about three years ago with Greta. And 45 years ago, when I rode the route for the first time, the current cycle path did not exist in large parts. Did cycle paths even exist back then?

And, as always, a good mix of really beautiful parts and rather boring stretches, until the first rest stop in Melsungen, one of the many half-timbered small towns.

There I had coffee at the market, later I met an older lady who had also been in the cafe, and we talked a bit about our respective tours (in opposite directions). My encounter for today. Well. There didn't seem to be enough going on for street music, so onwards.

The weather remained quite changeable, after 70 km I reached Rotenburg, here again half-timbered houses, even less going on, and then the rain started, it was 6:00 pm, my phone acted up because it couldn't find its own SIM card anymore, a nice young man in the phone shop took out the SIM card, blew on it a bit, gave me the necessary needle, and it worked again for now.

Today my first guesthouse overnight stay on this trip, at 'Haus Irmgard' with a nice older lady. I took a little stroll through the "city", which was now completely dead. It was also really cold, 13 degrees! And that's it for today. 78 km, a total of 405.
