Tasmania - The Bay of Fires

The Bay of Fires was named after the fires of the Aborigines that explorer Tobias Furneaux saw on the beaches in 1773. The 50 km stretch of coastline is a paradise for beach lovers with its crystal-clear water and white sands – you really can't have more beach than this!

In some places, the “orange” granite stones, caused by a lichen, can be seen again and again – a truly extraordinary contrast.

Great Day Trip

A wonderful car tour goes from St. Helens to The Gardens in the southern section of the Bay of Fires. From Jeanneret Beach, dozens of beach access points lead to the stunning and deserted beaches.

Note: from the exit onto the C848, there are no more toilets, nothing to buy, and no café or restaurant. So either pack a picnic or detour to Binalong Bay on the way back and enjoy an extraordinary pizza with a view over the bay at The Hub Seaside. Or grab a dozen fresh oysters to take home at Lease 65 on the C850.

Our Tips for the Bay of Fires

• In St. Helens, the food supply is normal again. There are several supermarkets, a butcher, a hardware store, post office, and pharmacy, some clothing stores, several gas stations, liquor shops, ...
• At The Hub Seaside in Binalong Bay, you can find outstanding pizza: True Blue | Bianco Special | Original Sin and Fennel Sausage & Pumpkin are highly recommended. We made a special trip because of it.
• Oyster fans will feel right at home at Lease 65 on the C850. Here you can get a dozen opened oysters for an amazing 25 Australian dollars (about 16 Euros), an unbeatable price.
• Lobster fans shop at Bay of Fires Lobster. Very popular, by three o'clock in the afternoon it is sold out and people still come wanting to buy.
• We stayed at the Panorama Hotel St. Helens (Level 1, Room 52). Great restaurant terrace with a view of the lagoon and Georges Bay and very good food, highly recommended.
• Through www.destinationbayoffires.com, you can rent very nice houses along the coast.
