From Matera, we continue to Alberobello. This town is famous for its over 1,000 white Trulli houses, which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996, enchanting us with their unique architecture.
The Trulli date back to 1500 BC. They are early examples of an isolated building technique - cool in summer and warm in winter. Both the walls and the conical roof are constructed using dry stone masonry, without mortar and only with limestone chips: this way, air chambers were formed between the stones, keeping the temperature relatively constant.
- Excellent restaurants include Trattoria Terra Madre, La Cantina, and of course Coppino (reservations are essential).
- At Paco Wines, tastings are on the agenda. For 5 euros, you can sample the wines. They are served
in 0.2 l portions, along with Tarulli. And for those who wish, a delicious antipasto plate can be ordered. - Accommodations in Alberobello: be sure to check that the parking is directly by the Trullo, or else you'll have to roll your suitcase through the alleys.
