Sigiriya - Lion Rock.
Our hike to Pidurangala Rock, which is not the main highlight - that title belongs to Lion Rock, the Lion Rock. This is what you look at when you climb Pidurangala Rock. I claim that this is the more beautiful view, as the sight of the rock, which stands dominant in the plain, is impressive. A monolith of volcanic origin, Singha Giri being its original name, Sigiriya its current name and thus the namesake of the small town that is the starting point of the hike. Translated into English, it means Lion Rock. A historic fortress is located on Lion Rock - it is hard to find a better place for a good overview.
Pidurangala Rock - at its base is a cave temple, which, like all the temples we encounter, is filled with devotees. An atmosphere that always leaves us in awe, so as not to disturb the worshippers - we are merely guests and allowed a brief glimpse. The paintings at the entrance feature Cloud Maidens, reminiscent of Cambodia's Apsara - the Spirits of the Clouds. Before the temple, cloths are hanging on a pole and some lie on the ground. These are cloths for visitors who are not dressed appropriately for a visit to the temple; they are provided to cover legs and/or shoulders. I initially notice the cloths on the ground and think nothing of it, but a question mark remains. On the way back, we then see monkeys tumbling on the pole, viewing it as a challenge to open the knots so that the cloths fall - and best of all, to fall with them, only to quickly scramble back up with a scream. I understand this fun!
