Langkawi - Fly, red eagle, fly

Langkawi - you beautiful island up north, on the west side of Malaysia, near the border with Thailand. An interpretation of your name means: 'Island of the reddish-brown eagle'. The Malay word for eagle is 'helang' (colloquially 'lang'), and 'kawi' refers to a red stone that was used as chalk.

We fly from Georgetown/Penang to Langkawi, 50 minutes, a hop. 

Langkawi - everything the island heart desires can be found here. Beautiful beaches, whether white and powdery, rocky, wide and long, or hidden in a cove. Whether loud, noisy, full of adventure offerings, or quiet and secluded. Mountains covered with jungle, monkeys to watch out for, wide views, short paths. Unique, UNESCO-protected landscapes where limestone meets mangrove. 

A mix of awe-inspiring luxury resorts to simple accommodations, mediocre beach restaurants with canned beer for the pumped-up gentlemen and the preened ladies, excellent food in simple warungs, and everywhere warm-hearted people who may marvel at the individual tourist species. We spend the 7 days with moped tours, beach breaks, and enjoy the view from our guesthouse over the rice fields.
