Montélimar is on the agenda today, known for its traditional production of nougat. I had to first get over the idea that it was the brown stuff I used to enjoy as a child, sneaking spoonfuls from the bucket in my grandfather's workshop, which was the filling of the delicious croissants that the French would sell as filled croissant.
Far from it, the nougat from Montélimar is white nougat, Wikipedia describes it as follows, quote:
“ The history of Montélimar nougat supposedly dates back to the Greeks, who brought it to Central Europe. The recipe arrived in Provence via Marseille, where production began in the 16th century with the introduction of Asian almond trees. It has been mentioned as nux gatum, meaning “(cake) with nuts”, since 1700. However, in Montélimar itself, the folk etymological explanation is preferred, claiming that the name is derived from tu nous gâtes (“you spoil us”).”
We set course towards the Soubeyran Museum of Nougat, where the origin, history and traditional production are vividly demonstrated. To conclude, we strolled through the sinful mile, and I can tell you, we also stocked up on a few kilos of hip gold, well aware that we would definitely need help to get rid of it, which we are hereby requesting.
Afterward, a brief trip through the city center, with the Café du Temple at the eponymous square as my target. A quick snack, the city itself seemed deserted, perhaps due to the timing of the lunch break; there were many shops, but somehow closed, locked, barricaded.
At Carrefour, we wanted to do some shopping for our fridge and meal plan before heading back home.
It had rained the night before, so my first officer had significantly fewer issues with pollen levels.
Upon arriving at Gustav, we immediately activated the grill, and shortly after that, a delicious meal was ready on the table.
We rounded off the day with a pastis at Bar Restaurant Du Château.
