Trondheim October 23-30, 2025/October 29

Today we travel to Bosberg, Leinstrand where we will visit the Leinstrand Church, then to Børsa Rye and back.

The Leinstrand Church ( Norwegian : Leinstrand kirke ) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in the Municipality of Trondheim in the county Trøndelag, Norway. It is located in the village Nypan, about 12 kilometers south of the City of Trondheim. It is one of the churches of the parish Byneset og Leinstrand, which belongs to the deanery Heimdal og Byåsen in the Diocese of Nidaros. The red wooden church was built in 1673 in the long church style by architect Ole Jonsen Hindrum. It accommodates about 200 people. 

The oldest surviving historical records of the church date back to 1533, but the church was not new at that time. The old church was likely built in the 14th or 15th century. Little is known about the old church, except that it was probably located about 100 meters northeast of the current site. In 1673, the old church was demolished, and a new, long wooden church was constructed about 100 meters southwest of the old location. The building was consecrated on September 17, 1673. In 1783, parts of the church collapsed due to a weak foundation and ground movements. In the following summer, the church was rebuilt at the same location with a strengthened foundation, mainly using recycled materials from the old church. At the same time, the church was expanded and restored. From 1831 to 1837, the church underwent extensive renovations. In 1905, a new tower was built on the west side of the building and the old flat ceiling over the nave was replaced with a vault.

In the afternoon, we will explore the city of Trondheim again, visiting the Old Town Bridge, the Nidaros Cathedral, the Stiftsgården, and Bakklandet.

Bakklandet  is a district of the City of Trondheim in the county Trøndelag, Norway. It is located in the neighborhood Østbyen in the Municipality of Trondheim, on the east side of the river Nidelva, between the Bakke bridge ( Bakke bru ) and the Old Town Bridge ( Gamle Bybro ). The district is characterized by small wooden houses and narrow streets. It is one of the city's major tourist attractions.

In 1965, the street construction plan for Trondheim proposed to demolish a large area in Bakklandet to create space for a four-lane motorway to connect the road “Elgeseter gate” with the road “Innherredsveien.” The plans faced opposition from residents, and by the early 1980s, they were abandoned, although the city's environmental council had already approved the depopulation of the district in 1974.

In the early evening (5:30 PM), we may already behold the first northern lights. This show lasts the entire night until 3:00 AM when we prepare for the journey home. Incredibly beautiful and impressive.
