Cherbourg

You are not a beauty, Cherbourg. But the harbor city has character, that must be acknowledged. And plenty of rugged charm. Additionally, there is a top-notch maritime museum where the first French nuclear submarine, the La Redoutable, can be visited.

And there is a wonderful botanical garden, where southern plants also find a home. A stroll through the city makes it clear that this city has also suffered enormously during World War II. Yet a few buildings still remind us of Cherbourg's heyday from the 17th to the 19th century. And that some of the great luxury liners, like the Titanic and the Queen Mary II, anchored here. The Place Général de Gaulle is particularly splendid, with its beautiful fountain and the theater in the style of the Belle Époque. A grand cinema is “Cherbourg Transatlantique,” the magical place where one transferred from train to ship and traveled to the world from there. A hint of this can still be felt today...
