Vast landscapes, square fields and crops, a few cows, and a sky with clouds of varying shades of gray – this is how Calvados largely presents itself to the viewer. But appearances can be deceiving. Here, you can also find cultural treasures of the highest order. This includes the village and the Château Balleroy, located only about 20 minutes by car from our campsite in Tournières.

The château and the village of Balleroy were built in 1631 by the famous architect François Mansart (1598-1666) at the request of Jean II. de Choisy, advisor to Gaston d'Orléans, brother of Louis XIII. They are an example of innovative urban planning that has inspired other locations in France, including Versailles. In 1970, the château was acquired, restored, and re-furnished by American media mogul, publisher, and philanthropist Malcom S. Forbes. Today, it belongs to Roy Eddleman, a long-time friend of the Forbes family.

Currently, the façade of the château is being renovated. However, this does not detract from a stroll through the expansive park and the beautiful gardens.
