From Wanaka to Mount Cook

The next day, we actually want to head north along the west coast towards Nelson. However, during the test run, the engine problem occurs again. I change the spark plugs on suspicion, but that doesn’t seem to be the issue either. So, we change our plans and drive back to Christchurch with a maximum of 2500 RPM and let the car be checked at a garage, as I no longer trust the AA or the local workshops. After 30 minutes, the engine suddenly runs smoothly; I can accelerate cleanly and rev it up to Bregenz. Perhaps the new mass airflow sensor just needed some time to adjust? No idea. In any case, we continue on more relaxed and also take a detour to the end of Lake Pukaki to undertake a two-hour hike towards Mount Cook (the highest mountain in NZ at around 3700m). It’s a wonderful environment; the clouds roll over the snow-capped peaks, and you can see glaciers and huge snowfields. The hiking trail is well frequented, especially with the many Asian tourists noticeable. Our next break is at Lake Tekapo; we’re 10 minutes too late for the campsite, but we still visit the small chapel with a view of the lake from the altar before parking for the night at a simple, free spot.
