Hong Kong

Published: 10.08.2019

Our time in Hong Kong flew by. In a city with millions of things to see and do, we did our best. We even took a day trip to Macau, but more on that later.

On the first day, we went to Victoria Peak to enjoy the sunset and the (unfortunately somewhat disappointing) light show. After that, we had our last dinner together and said goodbye to most of the group.

The next morning, we started our adventure to Suicide Peak. We overcame several obstacles and met many kind and helpful people. They gave us directions, good advice, and even provided us with water. Despite the heat and humidity, we made it to the top and were very proud of our achievement.

After returning to the hotel, we treated ourselves to a swim in the pool.

During the rest of our time in Hong Kong, we explored the nearby area, the night markets, the artist district, the famous Buddha statue, took a walking tour of the darker side of the city, and went to Macau.

Macau is a Chinese special administrative region that we were able to visit without a visa. The island group is famous for its many casinos, which are truly impressive. But it also has a lot of culture to offer. There are still many buildings and ruins from the colonial era when Portugal ruled there. Portuguese is still an official language. Our day trip was an impressive and exciting experience.

Of course, our time in Hong Kong was also dominated by the ongoing protests that took place throughout the city and at the airport. While we were there, the protests remained peaceful. But as soon as we boarded the airport bus, our friend from the hostel informed us that the protests in our street had escalated into violence. Fortunately, our bus arrived at the airport without any further obstacles, and the protest there was noisy but generally peaceful.

Now we are looking forward to coming home and hopefully enjoying slightly cooler temperatures. 😊😀
