Cruise with Mein Schiff 5

Today, our destination was Nafplio, a beautiful small town on the Peloponnese. Since the Mein Schiff 5 was anchored off the coast, we took the tender boats to shore. Even during the ride, we had a great view of Nafplio and the impressive fortresses overlooking the town.

However, we decided to skip the famous Palamidi Fortress today. The 999 steps up were a bit too much for us. Instead, we set off on foot to explore the historic old town and the Acronafplia Fortress.

Passing by the monument of Greek freedom fighter Staikos Staikopoulos and the small Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, also known as Frankoklisia, we continued through the charming streets of the old town. Everywhere there was something to discover – old houses, small squares, and lovingly designed corners.

The path up to the Acronafplia Fortress was particularly beautiful. Through the historic fortress gate, we arrived at the old fortification area. At the top, we were rewarded with a magnificent view. Below us lay Nafplio, and out in the bay, we could see the small Bourtzi Castle, picturesque on its island in the sea. A truly lovely moment that we wished to linger in a bit longer.

Afterward, we strolled again through the winding alleys and came to the impressive Agios Georgios Cathedral, the Metropolitan Church of Nafplio. We also saw the Archaeological Museum from the outside – there was no time for a visit today.

Nafplio charmed us with its unique flair. The combination of sea, old fortresses, historical buildings, and cozy streets made this stopover a very special experience. A wonderful day that we took back to the Mein Schiff 5 filled with many impressions of this charming town.
