A Rainy Day in Piraeus

Actually, our excursion to Aegina was planned for today. We intended to take the ferry from Piraeus to the island and spend some lovely hours there. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate at all. It kept raining, so we eventually decided to forgo the excursion.

However, we didn't want to stay on board completely. So, we set out for a little walk through Piraeus – but without an umbrella. We had to take cover time and again and wait a few minutes until the next downpour passed by.

Our path first took us past the Church of Agios Nikolaos. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors – fitting for a significant port city like Piraeus.

Next, we headed to the Holy Church of Agios Spyridon, which is dedicated to the patron saint of Piraeus. The history of the site goes back several centuries and the church is one of the well-known Orthodox places of worship in the city.

We also passed by the Zoodochos-Pigi Church, the “Life-Giving Spring.” Given the changeable weather, the small breaks under awnings and doorways were always welcome.

Our destination was finally the market of Piraeus. The historic old market hall no longer exists. Instead, there are market stalls that are sheltered under a large glass roof. During our walk, we were able to get a glimpse of daily life in Piraeus.

On the way back, we inquired about the ferry connections to Aegina. Because we certainly haven't completely given up our plan.

Perhaps on a later trip, we'll have a longer stay in Piraeus – and hopefully better weather then. Aegina is definitely still on our list. Today, it was just a small walk through Piraeus, but even such unplanned days are part of a cruise. 🌧️🇬🇷⛴️
