Serengeti Part 1 - The Slumber of the Big Cats

Day two of our safari takes us to the Serengeti.

The Serengeti savanna is approximately 30,000 square kilometers, about the size of Belgium. The Serengeti National Park covers about half of the savanna.

During the 2.5-hour steep, dusty, and bumpy ride (not for the faint-hearted) we already passed through the Ngorongoro National Park.

On the way, we were able to see some gazelles, antelopes, and giraffes.

But our main focus today was on the big cats.

Since it was very warm, the lions didn't want to move much, which was fortunate for us. This allowed us to take some good snapshots. Later, we also spotted a cheetah mother with her young and some hyenas.

Along the way, we crossed paths with hundreds of gazelles, some warthogs, a few giraffes, and an elephant herd with over 40 animals.

After unsuccessfully trying to spot a leopard for nearly an hour, we made our way to our campsite.

In close proximity, there were giraffes, zebras, monkeys, dik-diks, and a marabou that could have entered the campsite at any moment.

With the hyenas and the marabou, we could already check off the list of the Ugly Five.

With the lions, we are now at 3/5 in the Big Five.

Tomorrow, we will continue to the northern Serengeti to observe the animal migration of the large wildebeest and zebra herds.
