Ngorongoro Crater

After a starry and icy cold night, we set off to the Ngorongoro Crater. With an area of 260 square kilometers, it is about 2.2 times the size of Trier and relatively small. Nevertheless, all the known animals, including the Big Five and the Ugly Five, can be found here, except for giraffes. They have yet to make the steep journey with a height difference of 600m from the rim of the crater to the interior.

The interior of the crater is situated at an elevation of 2000m, resulting in a unique climate, and the animals have an abundance of green plants available year-round.

This means the animals have more to eat and have to wander less, which is why they are larger and stronger than those in the surrounding national parks.

Another special feature of the national park is the large lake. Since it has no outlet, it has become a salt lake, attracting flamingos.

Our main focus, however, was on the black rhino or square-lipped rhinoceros, in order to complete the Big Five.

Unfortunately, that did not work out, but we were able to observe some animals up close.

In the end, we were very fortunate during our game drives and observations, which is why we are happy and grateful for these experiences.
